Hugh Anthony Hilferty was born on April 12, 1919, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Daniel J. Hilferty Sr. and Catharine M. Graham Hilferty. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Hilferty was Killed in Action on September 3, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
