John Melvin Hubbard was born on September 3, 1923, in Maryland. He was the son of George Washington Hubbard and Lula May Woolford Hubbard. He was married to Mildred M. Gootee Hubbard. He worked as a farm hand before enlisting in the service on November 13, 1943. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Hubbard was Killed in Action on August 30, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland, USA.
