Lewis Elwin Kreger was born on November 6, 1920, in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. He was the son of Melvin Lincoln Kreger and Hazel Fanny Dalton Kreger. He was employed by the Midwest Walnut company before entering the service. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Kreger was Killed in Action on August 31, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
