Merlin Vanders Long was born on July 9, 1925, in Casey County, Kentucky. He was the son of William Edward Long and Ida May Smallwood. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Long was Killed in Action on August 16, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
