Gilbert Lucerno Martinez was born on January 11, 1925, in Fort Lupton, Weld County, Colorado. He was the son of Jacob Martinez and Minnie Lucero Martinez. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private during World War II.

Pvt Martinez was Killed in Action on September 3, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
