Walter White McCorkle was born on November 24, 1909, in Allegany County, New York. He was the son of Ira Black McCorkle and Edna White McCorkle. He served in the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC McCorkle was Killed in Action on August 29, 1944, during the Battle for Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York, USA.
