Dalton Emerson Speck was born on October 8, 1918, in Madison County, Alabama. He was the son of James Calvin Speck and Allie Mae Baker Speck. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on August 20, 1941, and inducted at Fort McClellan, Alabama. After completing basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina, Private Speck served for 18 months in the Panama Canal Zone before returning to the United States in June 1943. He then underwent further training at Camp Carson, Colorado, and Camp Roberts, California. In July 1944, he deployed overseas to France, where he was assigned to the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division.

Pvt Speck was Killed in Action on August 16, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Cochran Cemetery, New Market, Madison County, Alabama, USA.
