Clayton Gordon Stoddart was born on March 25, 1921, in Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of Marsdon R. Stoddart and Bertha L. Cunningham Stoddart. He was married to Winifred Rose Crowell Stoddart. He served in the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Staff Sergeant during World War II.

SSgt Stoddart was Killed in Action on September 3, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.
