William August Tollas was born on June 27, 1911, in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. He was the son of George August Ferdinand Tollas and Anna Marie Hink Tollas. He served in the 709th Tank Battalion as a Corporal during World War II.

Cpl Thomas was Killed in Action on August 26, 1944, during the Battle of Brest, France. He is now buried in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-James, Département de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France. He also has a cenotaph in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Oak Park Heights, Washington County, Minnesota, USA.
