Herbert Alvin Bailey was born on October 4, 1930, in Jefferson County, Alabama. He was the son of Claude Alvin Bailey and Minnie Elizabeth Davis Bailey. He served in the Mobile Boat Pool #1 as a Boatswain's Mate Third Class during the Korean War.

BM3 Bailey was thrown from a Landing Craft Medium and drowned near Chumunjin, South Korea, on March 18, 1952. He is now buried in the Valhalla Cemetery, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, USA.
