James Monroe Branning was born on May 11, 1894, in Jackson County, Florida. He was married to Della Branning. They had two daughters.
Branning registered for military service in 1917. He served in the 13th Battery, Field Artillery of the US Army as a Private during World War I. He died of disease on September 28, 1918, in the hospital La Courneau, Camp Hunt in France. He was originally buried in France but was returned to the U.S. and buried in Millville Cemetery, Panama City, Bay County, Florida, USA, in December 1921.
