Ralph O. Rhyne was born on April 10, 1889. He was the son of John Bunyan Rhyne and Margaret E. Ferrell Rhyne. He was married to Gertrude Goode.

He served in the 24th Field Artillery, Replacement Draft as a Private during World War I. He was seized with influenza and followed by pneumonia that caused his death on September 29, 1918, in the hospital La Courneau, Camp Hunt in France. His body rested in France for more than two years, then was sent back and buried at Beulah United Methodist Cemetery, Waco, Cleveland County, North Carolina, USA.
