Victor Andrew Soskice, born on May 9, 1923 was the son of noted sculptor Rossane Lurcat, was born in Forest Hills, Queens, and raised in Paris. He had completed his third year at Georgetown University when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1942. After joining the OSS, Soskice became a member of the British-led Scullion II operation, which sought to sabotage the Nazi Les Telots shale oil refinery near Autun, France. On the night of August 16, 1943, the Scullion II team parachuted into France and on the night of August 22nd penetrated the refinery. After being held at gunpoint, the French workers encouraged the agents to blow up the plant. After setting charges, the team retreated minutes before the oil furnaces began to explode in a series of fireballs. Pursued by packs of bloodhounds, the team members separated. Soskice and two British agents were arrested at a compromised safe house that was being watched by the Gestapo. They were interrogated under torture and eventually deported to Flossenberg concentration camp. After a long imprisonment, lieutenant Soskice was executed on March 29, 1945, less than two months before V-E Day.
