William Dominguez Aviles was born on January 21, 1930, in Coachella, Riverside County, California. He was the son of Josephine Aviles. He attended school in Nogales and was later employed by Grand Central Aircraft in Tucson. In April 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army, underwent infantry basic training at Camp Roberts, California, and was shortly thereafter deployed to the Korean War theater. He served in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and Light Weapons Infantryman during the Korean War.

On October 15, 1951, while attacking an enemy position near Chip'O-rein, North Korea, PFC Aviles was mortally wounded. He was killed while silencing one enemy bunker and charging onto another in a heroic effort to assist K-Company's Mission. He is now buried in the Holy Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum, Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA.
