Fred A. Gibbs was born on March 15, 1916, in Elmwood Park, Cook County, Illinois. He was the son of Anthony C. Gibbs and Anna Lewandowski Gibbs. He served in Company G, 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a First Lieutenant during World War II.

1Lt Gibbs was killed in Action on September 18, 1944, during the liberation of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands.
