John Hosey Stephens Jr. was born on November 22, 1922, in Langley, Aiken County, South Carolina. He was the son of John Hosey Stephens Sr. and Bessie Mae O'Neal Stephens. He enlisted in the service on March 13, 1943. He served in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as a Private First Class during World War II.

PFC Stephens was Killed in Action on September 18, 1944, during the liberation of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He is now buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands.
