Gilbert Masanori Gushiken was born on May 10, 1930, in Koloa, Kauai County, Hawaii. He was the son of Larry N. Gushiken and Oto Gushiken. He attended Kauai High School while working at Grove Farm before volunteering for military service in 1949. He served in the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and an Infantry Reconnaissance Scout during the Korean War.

PFC Gushiken was Killed in Action on July 19, 1950, near Taejon, South Korea. He is now buried in the Kauai Veterans Cemetery, Hanapepe, Kauai County, Hawaii, USA.
