Richard Yoji Hayakawa was born on May 9, 1930. He was the son of Saichi Hayakawa. He served in the 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and Light Weapons Assault Crewman during the Korean War.

PFC Hayakawa was Killed in Action on April 17, 1953, during the Battle of Pork Chop Hill in North Korea. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.
