Jack Akira Hiwatashi was born on December 29, 1929. He was the son of Kisaburo Hiwatashi and Koyuki Hiwatashi. He served in the 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, as a Sergeant and Light Weapons Assault Crewman during the Korean War.

Sgt Hiwatashi was seriously wounded by the enemy in North Korea on September 17, 1951, and died of those wounds the following day. He is now buried in the Maui Veterans Cemetery, Makawao, Maui County, Hawaii, USA.
