Born October 20, 1921, the son of Donald Scott Johnston and Flossie Gertrude (Basom) Johnston. He had two brothers: Harry Scott Johnston and Clement "Earl" Johnston. Before entering the military, Jim worked at a textile factory called the Viscose Company in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. He died in a B-24 crash over Alingsås, Sweden. The crash happened on Sergeant Donald Jim Johnston's 23rd birthday.
