Shizuo Motoyama was born on January 26, 1923, in Isleton, Sacramento County, California. He was the son of Tokuichi "Ben" Motoyama and Hiroko Imamura Motoyama. He entered the U.S. Army through the Selective Service system in 1948 and was serving as an interpreter for prisoners of war at the time of his wounding. He served in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Infantry Division, as a Private First Class during the Korean War.

PFC Motoyama was seriously wounded by the enemy while fighting in Korea on December 1, 1950, and died of those wounds the following day. He is now buried in the Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi, San Joaquin County, California, USA.
