When the forces on “Jackson Heights” called for flares to illuminate the area, Corporal Shibao exposed himself to the enemy fire as he dashed across the intensely shelled terrain to his mortar. Although seriously wounded, he remained at his mortar, firing illuminating flares which allowed his fellow soldiers to see the charging foe and repel the attack.
