Charles Yuji Tamaru was born on January 14, 1928, in Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii. He was the son of Sanichi Yamanishi Tamaru and Tami Kushiro Tamaru. He served in the 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, as a Sergeant and Infantry Intelligence and Reconnaissance Chief during the Korean War.

Sgt Tamaru was Killed in Action on November 4, 1950, in North Korea. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.
