Richard Mitsuo Watanabe was born on February 7, 1929. He was the son of Albert S. Watanabe and Saeko Iwasaki. He served in the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and Light Weapons Infantryman during the Korean War.

PFC Watanabe was Killed in Action on July 10, 1950, near Chochiwon, South Korea. He is now buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii, USA.
