Gary Kaname Yasunaka was born on June 24, 1926, in San Mateo, San Mateo County, California. He was the son of Hideichi and Shisuka Yasunaka. He served in Company I, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, as a Private First Class and Light Weapons Infantryman during the Korean War.

PFC Yasunaka was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on April 25, 1951. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
