Salvatore Grifo was born on June 8, 1917, in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Nicolo "Nick" Grifo and Marietta "Mary" Armao Grifo. He was married to Julia Cammareri Marx. He entered the army on February 17, 194, and served in Company C, 48th Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division, as a Private during World War II.

On August 22, 1944, Pvt Grifo took part in the liberation of Ballancourt-sur-Essonne as American armored and infantry units advanced through the town against German rear guard forces attempting to delay the Allied offensive. According to eyewitness accounts, Grifo and his fellow soldiers moved through orchards toward a crossroads when concealed German troops opened fire from a roadside ditch. During the ambush, PFC Singleton was killed instantly, while Grifo was critically wounded. He was evacuated from the battlefield but later succumbed to his wounds the same day. He is now buried in the Easton Cemetery, Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, USA.
