James Campbell was a 36-year-old seaman from New York who served aboard the merchant ship Volontaire. During the War of 1812, he was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, England. Campbell was wounded by gunfire during the Dartmoor Prison incident on April 6, 1815, and died from his wounds on the morning of April 8, 1815. He was buried at the American Prisoner of War Cemetery in Dartmoor Forest, Devon, England.
