George Popovitch was born in 1918 in Vermont. He was the son of John Popovitch and Mary Margaret Luckachina Popovitch. He was employed in stoneworking before enlisting in the service on February 18, 1942. He served in Company E, 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, as a Private First Class and assistant driver of a Sherman tank during World War II.
On September 20, 1944, PFC Popovitch and T4 Boggs were killed in action near Ley when their tank was destroyed by enemy tank fire. According to their tank commander, Capt. James Herbert Leach, Boggs was serving as the driver and Popovitch as the assistant driver of the Sherman Blockbuster. During the engagement, Leach attempted to move the tank into cover while Boggs and Popovitch remained inside. The Sherman was subsequently struck and destroyed, killing both men.
PFC Popovitch is now buried at the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial in Saint-Avold, Département de la Moselle, Lorraine, France.
