Jason Ray Parsons was born on October 31, 1984, in Caldwell County, North Carolina. He was married to Elvira “Ellie” Parsons. He graduated from South Caldwell High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 2001. He reenlisted in 2007 with plans to make the Army his career. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, based in Hohenfels, Germany, and was later deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt Parsons was killed on January 9, 2009, in Jaldak, Zabul Province, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He is now buried in the Blue Ridge Memorial Park, Lenoir, Caldwell County, North Carolina, USA.
