Brigadier General Dunlap was on his morning constitutional with his wife when he heard the screams of a French dairy maid who was caught in a land slide. He instantaneously ran to her aid and was subsequently buried. A group of engineers from the French army came to the site and worked hard for hours in danger themselves from the landslide. They eventually found Dunlap, dead and mangled, but protecting the still alive French girl. Buried at Arlington National Cemetery Section 3, Site Lot 1574. His first Navy Cross was awarded in WWI for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service. The second was for this landslide incident.
