Born 22 May 1894 as Joko Meštrović in Đuraševići, Montengro, he immigrated to Fresno, California in 1911 at the age of 17. He enlisted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In August 1918, during the the second battle of the Marne, he saved the life of his company commander by crawling through heavy machine gun fire to drag him back to safety and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. He died on 4 November 1918--some accounts say of influenza while some say he was killed in combat. After WW I he was buried in his homeland near Radovici.
