Lt. James D. Jackson was the commander of the 3rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment during the raid at Thionville. He led his squadron 70 miles behind enemy lines to reach Thionville. During his squadron's reconnaissance, the Germans opened fire on Jackson's squadron from across the bridge over the Moselle River. Lt. Jackson was shot and injured twice as he crossed the bridge to cut wires leading to explosive charges that would have blown the bridge. Although he was injured, Jackson did not die until July 2001. Jackson received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during the liberation of Thionville.
