Everett Lynn Childs was born on October 26, 1918 in Manchester, Iowa.
Childs was a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and served as a navigator for the 547th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bomber Group. On October 14, 1943, Childs' B-17 bomber crashed; he and 8 other members of his Squadron parachuted to safety. Childs was initially caught and made a German POW at the Fresnes prison. He escaped the prison camp, however, and spent a year in the French underground until he finally made it to freedom on August 20, 1944.
Childs died in Boulder, Colorado on September 26, 2011.
