Born on October 7, 1925 in Bristol County, Massachusetts, Francis Robert Sylvia was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a waist gunner for the 547th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bomber Group during WWII.
On October 14, 1943, his bomber plane was shot down in Griffeny, France. He parachuted safely to the ground and escaped to Switzerland to avoid German detection.
Sylvia died on May 31, 1995. He is buried at the Saint Columba Catholic Cemetery in Middletown, Rhode Island.
