1st Lt Eugene R. Baker took off from A-19 La Vieille (27) at the controls of his P-38 Lightning 43-28749 on an armed reconnaissance/bombing mission over Chartres. While flying over the town, Baker’s own fragmentation bombs, dropped at low altitude, ripped into his plane at 1330.
