B-17 (42-29893) 'El Diablo' Crash Marker -379th Bomber Group
SSgt Herbert Ethred May, mechanic of the B-17 42-5849 “Hell’s Belles II”, took off from station 106 Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire, UK at 1145 on a bombing mission over Nantes. However, it was fired upon by fighters and flak, and its engine caught on fire. Part of the plane landed in Meriais and the rest (wing and engine) landed near Fougeray. The plane was only partially evacuated.
