2nd Lt Donald R. Grenne, navigator of the B-17 41-24501, took off from Station 111 in Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire’s submarine pens. They were targeted by flak and fighters until the crew bailed out over the Atlantic. Greene drowned.
