SSgt Robert L. Kingen, belly gunner of the B-17 41-24501, took off from Station 111 in Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire�s submarine pens. They were targeted by flak and fighters until the crew bailed out over the Atlantic. Kingen was taken prisoner and sent to Stalag 17B in Braunau, Gneikendorf.
