SSgt Rupert William Arnold, left waist gunner of the B-17 41-24501, took off from Station 111 in Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire’s submarine pens. They were targeted by flak and fighters until the crew bailed out over the Atlantic. Arnold bailed out successfully but his parachute never opened.
