1st Lt Harry W. Strahlendorf, pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-76345 "Eddie Nor II", took off from A-6 at Sainte-Mere-Eglise at 0810 on his 48th mission. While attacking a flak emplacement in Cherbourg his squadron saw him go into a vertical dive, devoid of his aircraft’s tail. He died on impact. Initially buried by the locals, he was transferred to the US Sainte-Mere-Eglise cemetery #2 before being moved back to the States in 1948.
