2nd Lt Kenneth Hindersinn, pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt 42-74652, took off from station 357 Duxford, Cambridgeshire, UK on an escort mission for B-17s to the submarine pens at Bordeaux. Over la Rochelle south of Chateaubriand, German fighters from Jagdgeschwader 2 "Richthofen", commanded by Major Egon Mayer, shot down four of the P-47s, including Hindersinn’s. He was captured and sent to Stalag Luft 1 in Barth Vogelsang, Prussia.
