TSgt James W. Galloway, bombardier of the B-26 Marauder 41-31968 “Hearse for Six”, took off from station 485 Andrews Field, Essex, UK on a bombing mission over Le Havre’s gun emplacements. The mission was successful, but on the return flight they got lost in the fog, ending up back over land. They fired a flare as they thought they were over England, but the plane was hit by flak and evacuated at 6000 feet at 0920. Galloway landed safely but was taken prisoner and sent to Stalag 17B in Braunau Gneikendorf.
