SSgt John Sterling Saunders, mechanic of the B-17 41-24472, took off from Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK at 1030 on a bombing mission over Lille. The plane suffered a direct flak hit on its wing, tearing it off and causing the crew to bail out. Five crewmen died, including Saunders.
