2nd Lt William A. Hoffman III, navigator of the B-17 42-31387, took off from station 109 in Podington, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over Frankfurt. The plane was shot down by Fw-190s and evacuated around 1040. Either the entire crew was not able to bail out or they did so at too low an altitude for their parachutes to open. Hoffman survived the jump and landed at Crevecoeur-le-Grand. He later escaped by boat (MGB 503) back to the UK. His full E&E report is #530.
