SSgt William J. Scanlon, left waist gunner of the B-17 42-37984, took off from station 109 in Podington, Bedfordshire, UK at 0820 on a bombing mission over Frankfurt. The plane was shot down by Fw-190s and evacuated at 10000 feet around 1040 with engine 2 on fire. Scanlon survived the jump. He escaped back to the UK by boat on MGB 503. His full E&E report is #501.
