Cpl Samuel Anthony Pepe, gunner of the Douglas A-20 Havoc 44-565, took off from A-55 at Melun Villeroche on a bombing mission over Arbonne-la-Foret. The plane was observed corkscrewing downwards, eventually stabilizing in an inverted position and crashed thus, killing all aboard.
