Leroy F. Sasse was born on November 17, 1912. He enlisted in the Army Engineer Corps in March 1942. Earned a Battle Field commission at the Anzio Beachhead. He was a veteran of the African, Sicilian, Italian and Southern France Campaigns. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions at Carano, Italy. The citation reads "Prepared culvert for demolition 25 yards behind enemy lines. Shells exploding 12 yards away. His courage resulted in creating a major tank obstacle and prevented enemy armor from overrunning forward positions." He was killed in a mine explosion and earned three Purple Hearts.
