Fred Rollin Powell was born on August 30, 1921 in Thayer, Neosho County, Kansas. He was the son of Fred Powell and Irene Amanda Smith Powell. He served in the 191st Tank Battalion as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. Fred was killed in the Vosges mountains of France on 26 Oct 44 when his M4A1 Sherman tank was hit by an anti-tank round. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France at the age of 23. He also has a cenotaph located in Thayer Cemetery, Thayer, Neosho County, Kansas, USA.
