Edward P. "Fitz" Fitzgerald served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a Major in the 412nd Fighter Squadron, 373rd Fighter Group. He entered service in Connecticut. He was the pilot of the P-47 Thunderbolt Serial Number 42-27087 V5-Y who took off from the A-62 airfield in Reims/Champagne, France, on an admin mission to St James in Brittany. The plane disappeared between Reims and St James and crashed around 0830, likely due to poor weather and/or a mechanical problem. Fitz was initially buried at Villeneuve-sur-Auvers in France and is now buried at Brittany American Cemetery, St. James, France.
