James J. Costigan served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a First Lieutenant. He entered the service in Ohio. He was killed in action on 21 February 1945 at the helm of his P-51K (44-11359) WR C "Li'l Lila Lee ". Hit by flak as he strafed targets near Ansbach, his aircraft plunged to the ground without the pilot trying to extract from it. During his stay in the unit, he had not won any air combat. He is now buried in Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold, France.
